Regional law firms in India have expanded beyond their original locations. The 2026 IBLJ Regional Law Firm Awards showcase practices that rival major city firms in global transactions while retaining strong local knowledge.
Capital flows without borders
Startup financing has altered where legal work occurs. Aarambh Legal in Bengaluru assisted Indian companies through seed and pre-Series A funding rounds that drew investors from Japan and domestic funds simultaneously. Trine Partners in Ahmedabad represented a client in a $5 million investment in Spacefields, a Bengaluru-based aerospace and defense company, and advised a biotech firm on research collaboration.
JCSS Law focused on small and medium-scale startup investments across Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and the UK. The approach isn’t novel—Indian lawyers have long handled cross-border deals—but the volume has increased. A seed round with investors in three countries now occurs routinely.
Mergers and acquisitions follow the same trend. TLH managed United Company RUSAL’s strategic investment in Hyderabad’s Pioneer Aluminium Industries, a deal shaped by sanctions and management control valued in billions. The firm also handled Capgemini’s acquisition of Cloud4C Group, involving entities in 29 countries. Tempus Law Associates led the India portion of a data management acquisition spanning the U.S., Mexico, and India. Calibre Legal guided a Canadian company through its entry into GIFT City and separately advised a US multinational on acquiring an Indian subsidiary from its UK parent. None of these firms operate from Mumbai or New Delhi.

Infrastructure and regulation drive demand
Domestic disputes remain challenging. AK Law Chambers worked on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project arbitration and an Airports Authority of India case.
The transformation extends beyond transactions. A century-old Kolkata firm defending a patent in Calcutta High Court can now operate alongside a Hyderabad practice rebranding to signal broader ambitions. The work spans purposes, not just borders.
Firms once serving local clients now negotiate with Japanese investors or restructure deals for U.S. multinationals. The market’s energy stems from the understanding that the next deal, dispute, or regulatory challenge could originate anywhere. Success depends on delivering answers quickly, clearly, and without assuming one client’s needs mirror another’s.
Clients value the changes. Nominations from Canada, the U.S., and India highlighted firms for their speed, responsiveness across time zones, and customized advice. Technical skill is expected; the advantage lies in how quickly and personally a firm responds.
Karthik Das, counsel at Heuristica Discovery Counsel in Toronto, called Calibre Legal “thoroughly professional and timely,” noting senior partner Shadaan Mohammed Saipillai’s competence and courtesy.

Specialized knowledge also earned recognition. Caitlin Byczko, a partner at Barnes & Thornburg in Indiana, named IP specialists Selvam & Selvam “the best of the best” for their responsiveness. Lorraine Pinsent, a trademark agent in Alberta, appreciated their efficiency, emphasizing that timely communication matters in cross-time-zone work.
Aastha Verma, COO at Bengaluru-based AI company Tardid Technologies, said Trine Partners operates like an extension of her office, always seeking mutually beneficial outcomes. Sharad Jain, company secretary at Riddhi Siddhi Gluco Biols in Ahmedabad, praised Trine Partners for their prompt responses and legal expertise.
Customized advice distinguishes firms. Mona Vala, HR head at Glasier in Ahmedabad, said Trine Partners avoids generic solutions. “The advice is practical and tailored to our needs,” she stated. Rajiv Malik, legal leader at LG Electronics in Delhi, commended YJ Trivedi & Co for its strategic IP guidance and ethical standards, calling the firm a trusted adviser.
The key change isn’t that regional firms compete globally. It’s that they no longer distinguish between the two.
